«A tale of trust and friendship». Conversation with Roberto Lori

Your performance is an interpretation of the well-known fairy tale Puss in boots. Why this choice?

The tale is about the ability to see, in things and situations of supposedly little worth, a chance of transformation and fulfilment; it is a tale of trust and friendship. In the original story, the Cat is smart, cunning and gascon. We developed his character creating a weakness, a vulnerability (he is afraid of mice) so as to investigate the ability to overcome personal limits and fears for the sake of a friend.

In the show there are both dance parts and actings by Fabio Bacaloni. How are they connected?

Words and sounds are used with the same purpose of movement in the service of the narrative, of the emotional course, and in order to define characters and situations. The collaboration with Fabio Bacaloni, actor and dancer, makes this process very natural.

Puss in boots is a kids’ show: is there any difference in conceiving something for such a young audience, and if so, why?

Creating a kids’ show involves the same effort as a show for adults: research, quality of all the components, work on the image, on the music, etc. However, besides this basic work, a show intended for a very young audience also requires greater attention, a constant questioning of the themes and of the the way they are presented; it forces you to work on essentiality of signs, times and rythms. Children respond in a spontaneous way: the are either captured by what they see, or else they leave you alone.

You have been working with Simona Bucci’s company for several years already. How did this collaboration come about?

My collaboration started many years ago with my participation as a dancer in I Rimasti and has not ceased since, developing into a more and more articulated relationship based on mutual artistic esteem.

What do you expect from this edition of NID Platform?

I expect to be able to show my work in the best possible conditions, so as to take advantage of the presence of professionals and experts of the dance sector who can give me ideas, critiques, and many dates in their theatres and festivals.
